How to Manually Calculate Concrete for Your Metal Building Slab

While our calculator makes the process simple, understanding the math behind concrete calculations helps you verify estimates and communicate effectively with contractors.

Basic Concrete Slab Calculation (Without Footings)

To manually calculate concrete for a simple rectangular slab:

  1. Measure dimensions in feet: Length × Width × Thickness (in feet)
  2. Calculate cubic feet: Multiply all three measurements together
  3. Convert to cubic yards: Divide cubic feet by 27 (since 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet)

Example calculation for a 20′ × 30′ carport with 4″ thick slab:

  • Dimensions: 20′ length × 30′ width × (4″ ÷ 12) thickness in feet = 20′ × 30′ × 0.33′
  • Cubic feet: 20 × 30 × 0.33 = 198 cubic feet
  • Cubic yards: 198 ÷ 27 = 7.33 cubic yards
  • With 10% waste factor: 7.33 × 1.1 = 8.06 cubic yards

This means you’d need approximately 8 cubic yards of concrete for this standard carport slab.

Advanced Calculation Including Footings for Metal Buildings

Larger metal buildings often require footings for additional structural support, especially in areas with frost lines or poor soil conditions.

To calculate concrete needed for footings:

  1. Calculate footing volume: π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth
  2. Convert to cubic feet: Ensure all measurements are in feet
  3. Multiply by number of footings: Total footing volume = single footing volume × number of footings
  4. Add to slab volume: Combined total = slab volume + footing volume
  5. Apply waste factor: Multiply by 1.1 for 10% waste allowance

Example calculation for a 30′ × 40′ metal building with 6″ slab and 8 footings:

  • Slab volume: 30′ × 40′ × 0.5′ = 600 cubic feet
  • Single footing (18″ diameter, 24″ deep): π × (1.5′ ÷ 2)² × 2′ = 3.53 cubic feet
  • Total footing volume: 3.53 × 8 = 28.24 cubic feet
  • Combined volume: 600 + 28.24 = 628.24 cubic feet
  • Cubic yards: 628.24 ÷ 27 = 23.27 cubic yards
  • With 10% waste: 23.27 × 1.1 = 25.6 cubic yards

Calculating Bagged Concrete for DIY Projects

For smaller metal building projects where you might use bagged concrete:

  1. Calculate total cubic feet needed: Follow the steps above
  2. Determine bag yield: Check the bag for cubic feet yield
  • 40 lb bag ≈ 0.3 cubic feet
  • 60 lb bag ≈ 0.45 cubic feet
  • 80 lb bag ≈ 0.6 cubic feet
  1. Calculate bags needed: Total cubic feet ÷ cubic feet per bag

Example for a small 10′ × 12′ metal shed with 4″ slab:

  • Slab volume: 10′ × 12′ × 0.33′ = 39.6 cubic feet
  • With 10% waste: 39.6 × 1.1 = 43.56 cubic feet
  • 80 lb bags needed: 43.56 ÷ 0.6 = 73 bags
  • 60 lb bags needed: 43.56 ÷ 0.45 = 97 bags
  • 40 lb bags needed: 43.56 ÷ 0.3 = 146 bags

Slab Thickness Guidelines

The appropriate slab thickness depends on your metal building’s purpose:

  • Residential carports: 4-5 inches is typically sufficient
  • Agricultural buildings: 4-6 inches recommended
