Why a Proper Concrete Slab Matters for Metal Buildings
Metal buildings and carports require a solid foundation to maintain structural integrity, especially when facing high winds, heavy snow loads, or other environmental stressors. An improperly sized concrete slab can lead to:
- Foundation settling or cracking
- Uneven doors and walls
- Water pooling and drainage issues
- Premature wear on your metal structure
- Voided warranties in some cases
Planning Your Metal Building or Barndominium Conversion
Before beginning your barndominium project, consider these essential factors:
- Zoning regulations: Verify that residential use is permitted for your property
- Building codes: Familiarize yourself with local residential building requirements
- Permits: Obtain necessary construction and occupancy permits
- Utilities: Ensure access to water, electricity, sewage, and other essential services
- Foundation requirements: Determine the appropriate foundation type for residential use
- Budget planning: Create a comprehensive budget including insulation, interior finishing, and utilities

Slab Dimensions
Footings
About Footings: Footings provide structural support for your slab and help prevent settling. They're typically required for load-bearing structures or in areas with poor soil conditions.
Your Concrete Requirements
Ready-mix concrete is delivered in concrete trucks and is ideal for larger projects. Minimum order quantities may apply (typically 1-3 cubic yards).
Bagged concrete is ideal for smaller projects. One 80 lb bag yields approximately 0.6 cubic feet of concrete. Consider mixing capacity and working time when choosing this option.
How to Manually Calculate Concrete for Your Metal Building Slab
While our calculator makes the process simple, understanding the math behind concrete calculations helps you verify estimates and communicate effectively with contractors.
Basic Concrete Slab Calculation (Without Footings)
To manually calculate concrete for a simple rectangular slab:
- Measure dimensions in feet: Length × Width × Thickness (in feet)
- Calculate cubic feet: Multiply all three measurements together
- Convert to cubic yards: Divide cubic feet by 27 (since 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet)
Example calculation for a 20′ × 30′ carport with 4″ thick slab:
- Dimensions: 20′ length × 30′ width × (4″ ÷ 12) thickness in feet = 20′ × 30′ × 0.33′
- Cubic feet: 20 × 30 × 0.33 = 198 cubic feet
- Cubic yards: 198 ÷ 27 = 7.33 cubic yards
- With 10% waste factor: 7.33 × 1.1 = 8.06 cubic yards
This means you’d need approximately 8 cubic yards of concrete for this standard carport slab.
Advanced Calculation Including Footings for Metal Buildings
Larger metal buildings often require footings for additional structural support, especially in areas with frost lines or poor soil conditions.
To calculate concrete needed for footings:
- Calculate footing volume: π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth
- Convert to cubic feet: Ensure all measurements are in feet
- Multiply by number of footings: Total footing volume = single footing volume × number of footings
- Add to slab volume: Combined total = slab volume + footing volume
- Apply waste factor: Multiply by 1.1 for 10% waste allowance
Example calculation for a 30′ × 40′ metal building with 6″ slab and 8 footings:
- Slab volume: 30′ × 40′ × 0.5′ = 600 cubic feet
- Single footing (18″ diameter, 24″ deep): π × (1.5′ ÷ 2)² × 2′ = 3.53 cubic feet
- Total footing volume: 3.53 × 8 = 28.24 cubic feet
- Combined volume: 600 + 28.24 = 628.24 cubic feet
- Cubic yards: 628.24 ÷ 27 = 23.27 cubic yards
- With 10% waste: 23.27 × 1.1 = 25.6 cubic yards
Calculating Bagged Concrete for DIY Projects
For smaller metal building projects where you might use bagged concrete:
- Calculate total cubic feet needed: Follow the steps above
- Determine bag yield: Check the bag for cubic feet yield
- 40 lb bag ≈ 0.3 cubic feet
- 60 lb bag ≈ 0.45 cubic feet
- 80 lb bag ≈ 0.6 cubic feet
- Calculate bags needed: Total cubic feet ÷ cubic feet per bag
Example for a small 10′ × 12′ metal shed with 4″ slab:
- Slab volume: 10′ × 12′ × 0.33′ = 39.6 cubic feet
- With 10% waste: 39.6 × 1.1 = 43.56 cubic feet
- 80 lb bags needed: 43.56 ÷ 0.6 = 73 bags
- 60 lb bags needed: 43.56 ÷ 0.45 = 97 bags
- 40 lb bags needed: 43.56 ÷ 0.3 = 146 bags
Important Considerations for Metal Building Concrete Slabs
Slab Thickness Guidelines
The appropriate slab thickness depends on your metal building’s purpose:
- Residential carports: 4-5 inches is typically sufficient
- Agricultural buildings: 4-6 inches recommended
- Workshop or garage: 4-6 inches with reinforcement
- Commercial buildings: 6-8 inches with reinforcement
- Heavy traffic buildings: 8-10 inches with reinforcement
Reinforcement Requirements
Most metal building slabs benefit from:
- Wire mesh or rebar grid (typically #3 or #4 rebar in a 24″ grid pattern)
- Fiber-reinforced concrete for additional strength
- Proper compaction of the sub-base (typically 4-6″ of gravel)
Concrete Mix Recommendations
For metal buildings, we recommend:
- Minimum 3,000 PSI concrete strength (3,500-4,000 PSI for commercial applications)
- Air-entrained concrete in freeze-thaw climates
- Water-reducing admixtures for better workability
Planning Your Metal Building Concrete Project
Before ordering concrete for your metal building slab:
- Check local building codes: Many jurisdictions have specific requirements for metal building foundations
- Verify dimensions: Confirm your building dimensions match your concrete calculations
- Plan for utilities: Consider electrical conduit, plumbing, and drainage before pouring
- Schedule appropriately: Allow concrete to cure properly before installing your metal building (typically 7-28 days depending on conditions)

Frequently Asked Questions
How thick should a concrete slab be for a metal carport?
For most residential carports, a 4-inch thick concrete slab is sufficient. For carport housing heavier vehicles or areas with poor soil conditions, consider increasing to 5-6 inches. Always check local building codes as some jurisdictions may have specific requirements.
Do I need footings for my metal building foundation?
Footings are typically recommended for larger metal buildings, structures in areas with deep frost lines, or buildings placed on poor soil conditions. Footings help distribute the weight of your structure and prevent settling or shifting over time.
How long should I wait after pouring concrete before installing my metal building?
Most concrete reaches about 70% of its strength after 7 days of curing. For residential carports and smaller structures, this is often sufficient. For larger commercial metal buildings, waiting the full 28-day cure time is recommended for maximum strength.
What's the difference between fiber-reinforced concrete and using rebar?
Fiber-reinforced concrete contains thousands of small synthetic fibers that help prevent cracking throughout the slab. Rebar (steel reinforcement bars) provides structural strength and helps prevent major cracking. For best results with metal buildings, using both fiber-reinforced concrete and strategic rebar placement is ideal.
How much does concrete cost for a metal building slab?
Concrete costs vary by region, but generally run between $120-$200 per cubic yard for ready-mix delivered. For a standard 20’×20′ carport slab at 4″ thick, expect to pay approximately $800-$1,300 for the concrete alone, not including labor or site preparation.
Can I pour my concrete slab in sections for a large metal building?
While possible, pouring your concrete slab in one continuous pour is strongly recommended for metal buildings. Seams between pours can create weak points and potential water intrusion. If a large building necessitates multiple pours, consult with a structural engineer for proper joint design.
Do I need a vapor barrier under my metal building slab?
Yes, a vapor barrier (typically 6-mil polyethylene sheeting) is recommended under metal building slabs. This prevents ground moisture from migrating through the concrete, which can cause condensation issues inside your metal building.
Should my concrete slab be exactly the same size as my metal building?
There are several different effective ways to pour a concrete slab. You should always speak to your local township to get an idea of what your areas requirements are or consult with a local concrete professional.
We recommend most of our customers to either pour the slab the same size as the building to prevent water intrusion. Another good option is to pour the slab 6-12 inches beyond the dimensions of your structure with a built in slope to help prevent foundation erosion.
Can I add a concrete slab under my existing metal carport?
Yes, though it requires temporarily removing or supporting the structure. Many customers initially install on ground anchors then later add a concrete foundation.
How should I pour my concrete slab?
Your concrete slab should have a slight slope (typically 1/8″ to 1/4″ per foot) away from the center to prevent water pooling. For enclosed metal buildings, the slab should be 4-6″ above the surrounding grade to prevent water intrusion.
